No Current Malware Protection Lab ResultsWhen I review a Windows antivirus utility, I turn to the latest reports from the big testing labs. If you’ve removed Webroot from an old computer, you can use the command system to deactivate it, freeing up that license for use on another Mac or PC. You can also lock, shut down, or restart the computer. If you’re managing Webroot for a tech-challenged family member, you can run a scan and deal with the results, all without driving across town. In the latest report from AV-Comparatives, every product except the less-known BitMedic protected against at least 99% of the malware samples, and every product except BitMedic received certification. Unfortunately, neither includes Webroot in its latest test reports.Lab reports for Windows antivirus products exhibit a much larger point spread than those for Mac antivirus. Fortunately, two of the labs I follow test Mac antivirus products. I can't do as much hands-on testing with macOS products. I also perform my own hands-on tests, using live malware safely isolated in a virtual machine. Here again, Webroot doesn’t appear.Avast, Avira, and Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac are the only products that appear in the latest reports from both labs. Avira, Clario, MacKeeper, and Norton all reached 18 points. Products can earn six points in each category, so the maximum possible total is 18 points. That last category refers to minimizing false positives, which are instances when the antivirus flags a valid program as malicious. You'll have to dig into Advanced Settings to select a quick scan.In testing, a full scan of a clean Mac averaged 9:45 (minutes:seconds), much quicker than the current average of 27 minutes. The quick scan still checks active processes, but then only looks at files in startup locations and known threat locations. As the name implies, the default full scan looks at files and active processes. Fast Full ScanLike most of its competitors, Webroot offers two types of malware protection scanning. You always get a full scan.The speediest scan among recent products was seven minutes, by MacKeeper. My Webroot contact confirmed that at present the setting to choose a quick scan isn’t working. In addition, a quick scan came in at exactly the same time. But since it's so crazy fast, there's no real reason to switch away from the default.Like most Mac antivirus utilities, Webroot aims to eliminate any Windows malware it sees, so your Mac doesn't inadvertently infect other devices on your network. You can modify the schedule to run on just one day of the week, or to run on startup. Also, by default it schedules a full scan every day. Airo, Intego, and Norton 360 Deluxe (for Mac) all came in at less than 15 minutes.Webroot runs a scan immediately upon installation, something that not all antivirus tools do. Avast virus definitions update for macMy own testing confirmed that this state was temporary—a few days later, the problem was gone.Even when Webroot did scan the drive, it did not detect a single one of the Windows malware samples. My contact at the company confirmed that those features were temporarily not working. Even when I enabled the setting called Scan mounted drives and launched a full scan, Webroot ignored the thumb drive. I also turned on a setting called Automatically scan removable media.Contrary to my previous experience, Webroot did not scan the drive as soon as I plugged it in. These boxes control such essential activities as blocking malware on execution, scanning modified files, and using a secured mode of keyboard entry.
